Next Debian release, Lenny, by the end of 2008… maybe
Yesterday, at the Australian national Linux conference, senior developer Martin Krafft said during a miniconference that the next release of Debian GNU/Linux, Lenny, is expected to take place before the end of 2008… However, with a twinkle in his eye, Krafft indicated that the traditional delays which have generally been a part of Debian could eventuate - “last time we were only four months late so this time if it goes into February 2009, it would be an improvement“.
Krafft also said there would be better security hardening in Lenny with compiler/linker extensions to guard against the most common run-time problems such as buffer overflows.

Are they going to enable StackGuard/ProPolice GCC extensions by default? That’s a good news
The bad one is that they’re going to release stable releases more often - I’m afraid this can affect stability and/or security or maybe reduce number of platforms supported

GCC 4.3 will be the default compiler for Lenny: http://people.debian.org/~terpstra/message/20080127.215359.8dbb148f.en.html
But besides that I don’t have more information at this time.
Regarding the stability, I am not sure this will be a problem. I have been running testing for many years just fine, and also other debian based distros (like ubuntu for ex.) are build on testing or sid. I am sure we will not see the debian stable suffer from stability if they mange to release more often major versions. :-).

Sure, but smth. tells me you’re using x86-based PC, aren’t you?
And I have to run Debian at x86, x86-64, SPARC and MIPS platforms - that’s why I’m worried about stability.

Actually I am manging a large server farm and most of the servers run debian amd64 (even since it was an unofficial port). Obviously I am managing also some i386 boxes and also one powerpc ;-).

And all this stuff is running lenny? You’re really a risky man

Oh, no… Sorry you missunderstood me. I didn’t said I run lenny on them. Most of them are etch. Btw. at this time I don’t see a real advantage to run a production server on lenny.
