It would be great to have hints on the modification part as well. I tried to apply this procedure to introduce a patch into a library with a broken function (library is glib), but with no luck.

I found that there was a upstream/tarballs/glib-2.12.4.tar.gz tarball, so I tried to unpack/patch/repack it, but I got an error:

dpkg-source -b glib2.0-2.12.4
dpkg-source: building glib2.0 using existing glib2.0_2.12.4.orig.tar.gz
dpkg-source: building glib2.0 in glib2.0_2.12.4-2.diff.gz
dpkg-source: cannot represent change to upstream/tarballs/glib-2.12.4.tar.gz: binary file contents changed
dpkg-source: building glib2.0 in glib2.0_2.12.4-2.dsc
dpkg-source: unrepresentable changes to source
debuild: fatal error at line 1228:
dpkg-source -b glib2.0-2.12.4 failed

So, it seems that the command only work if you don’t do any change in the original stuff.
